7th ANNUAL WOMEN'S RECOGNITION AWARDS

Honors Award
Honorable mention in this award category went to Dr. Shauna Little, Board Chair of Pacific Post Partum Support Society and the Honorary Lifetime Chair of the Board of Directors of New View Society.

Port Moody, BC
On February 26, 2007, Soroptimist International of the TriCities was pleased to give away over $18,000 at the 7th Annual Women's Recognition Awards Luncheon. With six worthy women to honor and financial grants going to three community organizations.

In her accptance speech for the Making a Difference for Women Award - Honorable Mention, Shauna Little graciously shared the honor with all the people who have worked to develop and maintain the Pacific Post Partum Support Society and New View Society support programs over the years. Shauna was presented with some beautiful roses along with a House of Commons, Canada certificate and letter of congratulations signed by Port Moody- Westwood-Port Coquitlam MP James Moore.

Soroptimist International of the TriCities has been very generous to PPPSS as well, awarding us three different grants over the past year, totalling $7,677.50. These grants benefit our support programs in the TriCities and have paid for table-top/wall display boards which we use in our education and outreach activities. We are very pleased to have so much support and recognition from this organization of caring and cummunity-minded women.

FACE THE WORLD FOUNDATION

PPPSS recently received a grant from Face The World Foundation for $5,000 towards the costs of our Outreach Program.

Face The World Foundation (www.facetheworldfoundation.com) was formed in early 1991. Since then this unique charitable foundation has been helping the less fortunate members of the Vancouver community through innovatiove and entertaining fundraising events.

With the help of many generous patrons, Face The World Foundation is able to underwrite the cost of their legendary annual gala fundraiser and other events so that 100% of the funds collected go directly to charities in need. Also, because of the hands-on approach of the directors, and the assistance of dedicated volunteers, Face The World Foundation incurs minimal operational expenses. All of which contribute to the charity's success in helping worthwhile local organizations.

One initiative of our Outreach Program is presentations at Mother and Baby groups, which reached around 1400 new mothers last year. These interactive talks promote prevention, recognition and early intervention of difficult postpartum adjustment through discussion of self-care and other strategies to deal with stress, as well as information on where a mom can get help if she is experiencing anxiety or depression.

CORE FUNDING

Core operating funding last year was provided through:

  • Grants form the Gaming Policy and Enforcement Branch (Direct Access Program), the City of Vancouver, the City of North Vancouver and the District of North Vancouver.
  • Interest and earned revenue (workshops, book sales)
  • Donations
  • Contracts for services from Vancouver Coastal Health Authority (Vancouver, Richmond and the North Shore) and from Fraser Health Authority-TriCities Mental Health.

CHILDMINDING - for daytime groups

The childminding service is offered to mothers attending our North Shore, Richmond, Eastside Vancouver and Delta support groups. For many new mothers who are unable leave their nursing infants and other children at home, this service enables them to access the support our groups provide.

Last year's childminding costs for the North Shore group were largely covered by funds provided by the City of North Vancouver ($300), the District of North Vancouver ($1,000) and Vancouver Coastal Health Authority (VCHA)-North Shore ($5,500).

Volunteer Richmond's Mobile Child Minding provided much of the childminding for the Richmond group, with the balance of childminding costs covered by a grant from Richmond Children First, through VCHA-Richmond.

The childminding at the Delta group was provided at minimal cost by OPTIONS: Services to Communities' Mobile Child Minding Service, which is in turn funded by Make Children First Initiative (Ministry of Children and Family Development) and the United Way of the Lower Mainland, Success by Six.

Finally, funds for about 1/3 of the childminding expenses at the Eastside Vancouver group were provided by VCHA-Vancouver. So far, VCHA-Richmond and VCHA-North Shore as well as both Mobile Child Minding Services (in Delta and Richmond) have renewed their contributions towards the service for the coming year.
