Telephone counseling
Many postpartum women who call receive ongoing support from trained
postpartum counsellors. This includes a follow up call and subsequent
weekly calls, assessment, and referrals to other health professionals as
indicated (e.g. reproductive psychiatry, therapists, social workers) and
support group if appropriate. All of our counsellors have been trained
in facilitation techniques and issues pertaining to postpartum
depression and adjustment. Additionally, many have recovered from their
own postpartum adjustment difficulties and therefore can offer not only
postpartum counseling expertise but can also understand and communicate
from personal experience.

Telephone Support Volunteer
The second type of telephone support we offer is done by volunteers who
have taken our Telephone Support Volunteer training. Telephone support
by volunteers is an integral part of the PPPSS treatment program. Most
of our volunteers have gone through our program and are interested in
giving back to their communities by helping other mothers. All of our
telephone support volunteers are mothers themselves and have either gone
through postpartum depression/anxiety or a difficult adjustment after
the birth or adoption of a child. Our volunteers, who work from home,
having made a 2 hour per week commitment, offer support to women in our
postpartum support groups. The role of our volunteers is to provide
additional assistance to women in our support groups between weekly
group meetings. Staff counsellors and volunteers work together and
inform each other of a client’s progress through recovery.
Our Telephone Support Volunteer Manual is
available for sale throughout Canada and is currently employed in many
telephone support volunteer training programs in Ontario and BC.
